June Russell's Health Facts

Alcohol - Thyroid

According to the Thyroid Foundation 13 million Americans (11 million of them women) have a malfunctioning thyroid, and most of them don’t even know it. Also there could be tens of millions more with “borderline” thyroid function. In addition to poor diet, many things affect poor thyroid functioning among them both prescription and recreational drugs and alcohol. Thyroid function is closely tied to adrenal health.

According to a report in 'Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research,' alcohol consumption changes thyroid function and reduced the levels of thyroid hormone.
{"Alcohol May Harm Thyroid Function in Mother, Fetus," Thyroid Newsroom, Mary Shomon, Jan. 2002}  Editor's comment: Although this was done with pregnant women who binge drank in their third-trimester, this study showed that alcohol has an effect on thyroid functioning in both the mother and the fetus.
